Team CANIDAE/LUCAS OIL Top Fuel Dragster and Driver Scott Whipple Set World Record and Take 2009 NSDA Season Championship

Records were broken this past weekend at the 2009 NSDA Dan Chittenden Fall Nationals in Primm, Nevada. After a few flat tires heading up Baker Grade on Thursday, Team CANIDAE/LUCAS OIL settled in for a full weekend of racing action. Unlike their last outing at Avenal, daytime temperatures in Primm were comfortable, registering in the 70s during much of the day.

After some great passes on Friday and Saturday, top fuel eliminations began on Sunday with #1 qualifier, Whipple and Team CANIDAE/LUCAS OIL setting a new world record ET of 2.278 at 162.75 mph on their first pass. Whipple went on to break that record in round two with a 2.273 ET defeating Jeff Janoe. Heading into the final round, Whipple and the Team CANIDAE/LUCAS OIL crew were pitted against Geoff Gill and his excellent crew. Blasting off the line, Whipple again broke his own world record for the 3rd time on the day while winning the championship with an astounding ET of 2.239 at 164.16 mph to beat Gill's performance of 2.343 ET at 148.41 mph.
Congratulations to Whipple and the rest of the top fuel crew including "Famous" Amos Satterlee, Carl Boley, Amos Satterlee Jr., Scott Gailey, Daran Rupp, Bill Parks, Greg Henley and "Big E" for a fantastic team effort!
In the Top Alcohol class, Team CANIDAE/LUCAS OIL driver Mike DeNunzio was narrowly defeated on Sunday by Nick Januik. DeNunzio ran a 2.611 ET to Januik's 2.603. DeNunzio's best ET of the weekend was a solid 2.569 during Saturday's eliminations. While a points championship was not in the cards for DeNunzio, he ran some great rounds in a tough field of competitors. Mike and the Team finished 2nd in points in this 2009 season
A big thank you to the Top Alcohol crew of Steve and Tony DeNunzio, Lee and Ron Gutierrez, Steven East, Tony Carbone, David Rice, Dennis Bartholomay, Carl Smith, and the rest of our families and friends that made it out to support both teams in 2009.

As another exciting sand drag season closes out, Team CANIDAE/LUCAS OIL would like to extend our gratitude to the NSDA and everyone else involved for their dedication, hard work and commitment putting these events together for racers and fans alike to enjoy.

CANIDAE T/F Team Takes First at Avenal – T/A Team Falls Just Short in Final

CANIDAE® Pet Foods Top Fuel Sand Drag Team, lead by driver Scott Whipple, took down the championship this past weekend with a thrilling hole shot victory in the T/F final over Geoff Gill. With daytime temperatures climbing well above 100 degrees, Avenal California's Sand Drag Track was once again home to fierce competition across all the divisions. Whipple and the T/F team earned the #1 qualfying spot going in, and then in an extremely close final, Whipple's 2.325 edged out Gill's 2.323 with the hole shot. The margin of victory being Whipple's reaction time of 0.13457 to Gill's 0.14107 for an overall edge of just .0045! Sunday's victory puts the CANIDAE Top Fuel team unofficially back on top in the race for the overall season championship, but by a mere 1 point. The 2010 Season Championship will be up for grabs when the season closes out with the Fall Nationals at Primm in October. Congratulations to Scott and the rest of the top fuel crew including "Famous" Amos Satterlee, Carl Boley, Amos Satterlee Jr., Scott Gailey, Daran Rupp, Bill Park and "Big E" for the great team effort at Avenal. And, a tip of the hat and thanks to Geoff Gill and owner/tuner Joe Bettencourt and his crew for another challenging weekend of racing and fierce competition on the track.

In the Top Alcohol final, Mike DeNunzio earned the Hole Shot as well but "slowed" to a 2.61 from his quicker qualifying rounds which wasn't quite enough to surpass Gary Mink's 2.46 in their final round match up on Sunday. Congratulations to Gary and the team on your win. Team CANIDAE's 2nd place finish on Sunday puts the T/A Team in 2nd place in the points standings. A big thank you to the T/A crew of Steve and Tony DeNunzio, Lee Gutierrez, Steven East, David Rice, Dennis Bartholomay, and the rest of the family that made it out to support the team. Both crews turned in great performances despite the grueling heat throughout the weekend. Thanks also to the NSDA and ASDI for putting on another great weekend of racing.

The 2010 season wraps up and season championships will be awarded at the 2009 "Dan Chittenden" Fall Nationals being held at the Primm Valley Resorts, October 23-25. With Avenal results this close there’s no doubt the season finale will provide plenty of fireworks for fans and race teams. There's still time to make your plans attend.

See you at the races!

This past weekend, Team CANIDAE Racing struck out across North America, from Mexico to Florida to New Orleans to Texas and Arizona, supporting Independent Retailers and sharing the message of Responsible Pet Ownership to hundreds of thousands of race fans and pet owners on behalf of CANIDAE All Natural Pet Foods.

It was a big week for Team CANIDAE with a total of six different events taking place. First up, Branden Jesseman continues to gather steam on the CANIDAE Motosport Kawasaki Supercross team. After winning his qualifying heat, Branden finished on the podium Saturday with a strong second place in New Orleans at the Live Nation SuperCross East-5 race. This was Jesseman's best race of the season and he is in top form heading into St. Louis next weekend.  Read the full story

Jerry Toliver and Jim Dunn Racing turned in their best performance yet in the still-young 2009 NHRA Full Throttle Series season. Toliver has only had 10 total passes in the CANIDAE Monte Carlo so far and keeps improving. At last weekend's 40th annual ACDelco NHRA Gatornationals at Gainesville Raceway in Florida, Toliver edged out Force Racing's Mike Neff in the first round. Toliver lost traction in the second round and was bested by veteran John Force. Read the full story

Managed by Ed Torrance, the CANIDAE Kawasaki Team Green amateur riders made their mark on the second amateur national of the new season by dominating the week in Texas, with an astonishing total of 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishes to their name. The Team Green riders are one step closer to racing at the Amateur National Motocross Championships at Loretta Lynn’s. Full information coming to the CANIDAE Racing blog soon.

The 23rd Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 race saw 226 total starters with only 162 finishers. This grueling 232.4 mile race in San Felipe, Baja California, Mexico concluded Saturday. In the Class 10 division, Scott Gailey and Scott Whipple shared driving duty and powered the CANIDAE Class 10 machine to a third place finish with a time of 6:20:30. Congratulations guys!

In sand drag news, the 2009 NSDA series completed its second race of the season in Yuma, Arizona with some awesome racing on eliminations day. After racing the same day and finishing 3rd at the San Felipe 250 in Mexico on Saturday, driver Scott Whipple and crew member Carl Boley raced back to Yuma making it just in time for the final qualifying session of top fuel.  Whipple and crew ripped off an amazing 2.382 on their only qualifying pass good for the #3 spot on the ladder. Whipple, with only one pass under his belt, went on to be narrowly defeated by only 6/100th's of a second by Matt Ludlow, who ran his career best pass of 2.34 and low ET for the event, in eliminations on Sunday. Shane Switzer went on to grab his first top fuel win. Congratulations to Shane, Mike and his entire crew for a great win. Whipple and the 2008 championship CANIDAE Top Fuel Team currently sit in 3rd place in their quest for another season championship just 12 points off the leader. Whipple was pleased with the team's efforts, and to be the first and only person to race in the Baja 250 and a Sand Drag event in the same day!

In the Top Alcohol bracket, our hats are off to Nick Januik who won his first NSDA T/A championship from our own 2008 T/A season champion Mike DeNunzio when Mike couldn't make it to the line in time after suffering engine damage in his semi final heat win. Take good care of that Nick. Mike wants it back soon!

Stay tuned to www.canidaeracing.com and canidaeracing.blogspot.com for more racing updates. Great job Team CANIDAE!

The Green Blur

Question: What is green and goes 160 MPH in less than the length of a football field?

Answer: The CANIDAE All Natural Pet Food, top fuel, sand drag car driven by some lunatic named Scott Whipple.

I have no idea how Scott got into this unbelievable sport, way back when, but I would imagine it went something like this:

Scott: “Hey Carl, have you ever wondered how fast you can cover 300 feet?”
Carl: “Nope, why do you ask?”
Scott: “Well, I think I can do it in less than 3 seconds.”
Carl: “What! Are you out of your mind? Maybe you if you had an F-16 Tom Cat, doing a flyby. Do you have one?”
Scott: “You know I don’t have one!”
Carl: “Well then, I guess it is not possible then.”
Scott: “Well I think it is.”
Carl: “Have you been hit on the head again? Maybe you could do it if you got back a mile or so in a Corvette and started once you hit 100 MPH?”
Scott: “Nah, I was thinking we would do this from a standing start.”
Carl: “Well, I guess you would need to borrow an NHRA Top Fuel Funny Car from Jim Dunn.”
Scott: “Nah, that would be too easy on pavement. I was thinking of doing it in the dirt.”
Carl: “WHAT!? Now I know you were hit on the head! On dirt? You are outta your mind.”
Scott: “Yeah, you are right, dirt would be too easy, let’s do it in SAND!”
Carl: “Ok buddy, just lie down here on this couch, and put this cold cloth on your forehead and it will all be alright. Now look at this ink spot on this card and tell me what you see?”
Scott: “Stop with all that! I feel fine, now where can I find a motor... a very big motor?”

As I laster learned, Scott built his first sand jeep “Thumper”, a 1974 CJ-5 Jeep with the help of his dad, George “Pops” Whipple, while still in his teens. After being introduced to organized sand drag racing in the late 1980s, Scott fell in love with the sand track and the need for speed. Scott steadily moved up through the various racing classifications – all the time pursuing his dream of one day driving with some of the top fuel racing idols he had always looked up to. That dream came true in 2002, when Scott made his first pass down the track behind the wheel of the Canidae Pet Foods 6000 Horsepower Top Fuel Sand Dragster. The dream that began in his teens became reality when Scott joined many of those racing idols in the top echelon of sand drag racing, competing as one of the world’s top fuel sand.

Over the years, Scott and the CANIDAE Racing Top Fuel Team have set numerous world records for both speed and ET and as defending 2008 NSDA (National Sand Drag Association) season champion continue to be a dominant force on the dirt track today.

Fast-forward to today. Scott is the man to beat on the NSDA circuit and there is a good reason for that... HE IS FAST! Scott invited me and my son to watch the final round of the Winter Nationals in Yuma, AZ this past Sunday to witness this intense sport. If you have ever been to a big time drag race at the local drag strip you know the impressiveness of these cars. Those drivers are constantly trying to figure out how not to spin the tires so they can make it down the track and there the drivers are on a clean, hard, smooth patch of concrete! These sand drag cars have to launch in a fine, soft, loamy substance and somehow find something that resembles traction. As it turns out, they are so good at finding this traction; they pull the front wheels off the ground for almost half the track! Their huge Goodyear tires with paddles bolted on, in what I would assume to be some strategic fashion, throw dirt 200 feet behind the car and 75 feet in the air. It is amazing! But even more amazing is the fact that these lunatics cover the entire 300 foot track in less than 2.40 seconds from a standing start! So the next time you hear the sand drags are coming to town, do yourself a favor, grab your buddies, grab your family, and grab the neighbors and head down to the sand drags. You won’t be disappointed! Oh yeah, tell Scott, that I said “Hi.” He will not be hard to miss; he is the guy driving the green blur.
